Insomnia

             Isomnia comes in many different flavors: Diffuculty falling asleep; no problem falling asleep but difficulty staying asleep; or waking up too early. It affects from 10 to 17 percent of adults in the U.S. (4). In most cases, insomnia comes from some other underlying reason. The three basic types of insomnia are transient, short-term, and chronic. Transient insomnia lasts for only a few nights, while short-term insomnia can last from trwo to four weeks. In a case of chronic insomnia, the person has poor sleep most nights lasting month or longer. Transient and short-term are generally what occurs when people are having some sort of temporary stress or change in atmosphere. Examples would be an environmental noise, extreme temperature chagne, sleep/wake schedule problems (e.g. jet lag), worries about a certain event, or side effects due to medication. In the case of temperature, it is interesting to note that a hot room or too many sleeping clothes may induce nightmar!
             es brought on by sweating. Similarly, shivering in a cold room may also awaken a person. When the stressful situation goes away, sleep usually returns to normal. Chronic insomnia is more complicated and usually comes from a combination of reasons, including a deeper physical or mental disorder. One of the most common cases is depression. Other causes include arthritis, kidney disease, heart failure, asthma, sleep apnea (), restless legs sydrome (), Parkinson's disease, and hyperthyroidism. Chronic insomnia can also be due to behavior practices, such as an overuse of caffeine, alcohol, or other substances. In the case of treating chronic insomnia, a doctor has to diagnose and treat any deeper problems, point out any behavior adding to the insomnia, and possibly prescribe a form of medication.
