Physicists do many different kinds of work. Physicists employed at universities will be required to prepare and give lectures. They will also be expected to direct the research of graduate students to carry on research of their own. Some of their time will be spent in the laboratory; some of it at their desks , often using a Computer, some of it reading, discussing, hinking and planning. Although they will probably work long hours, the freedom they will enjoy in planning their work will continue to make their lives rewarding. Physicists that are engaged in government research laboratories have much the same sort of life as university physicists, expect that they do no regular teaching. Although they belong to large organizations, they will have almost the same amount of freedom in arranging their own programs as their counterparts at university. If they are in juniour positions, they will be busy planning and carrying out experiments with technicians available to them. They will
have been widely used by all other sciences and by. Secondary school students should concentrate on subjects such as English, mathematics, physics, chemistry and other sciences. The objective is to extend the knowledge of physics. Role of Physics in the Job Physics is the science which tries to present a logical and coherent picture of the nature of matter and its relationships to other forms of energy. Physicists consider and observe the physical world, develop theories in mathematical terms which may be based on observations, design and conduct experiments to test these theories, and analyze the results. Physicists should also be self starters with initiative who can either work independently or in close cooperation with others as part of a team of theoreticians and experimentalists. Because this aim is so fundamental, the methods and achievements of phy~ics. Other personal attributes needed are an analytical approach to problem solving, curiosity, flexibility, independent and creative thinking, pleasure in working with ideas, and perseverance. If they are in more senior positions, they may have more administrative and planning duties and are less intimately concerned with the actual details of experiments. Some colleges and universities provide only the fIrst year or two of training which may then be completed at an institution offering a full honours program in physics. Hobbies which develop manual dexterity or technical knowledge can be very helpful.
