WORLD WAR ONE AND RUSSIA
The cost of World War One had a significant impact on Russian society. During the war Russia suffered great economic and military loses. This was the stepping-stone for revolutions that changed Russia into a Communist society. So it can be scene that World War One and its effects on Russian society helped bring about revolution. The Russian Empire had been changing fast fifty or so years before the outbreak of the First World War. During the fifty-year time period plenty of significant events took place that dramatically changed Russia. During the 1860s serfdom had been abolished and representative institutions for local government had been set up. In 1905 following a revolution, Tsar Nicholas II permitted the establishment of a national representative called the Duma. With this came political parties, elections, a freer press and a massive campaign to educate the Russian people. Also after the 1905 revolution Russia's economy started to boom. During this sort time period between 1905-1914 agriculture increased, harvest were good and production rose, more land was brought under cultivation and fertilizer and machinery increased also. Russian industry was also at a rise, imports and exports rose by 50 per cent. Therefore it can
This made things only worse, Tsar Nicholas had no military talent and the July offensive was a complete disaster. Consequently with the events of World War One Taking place it would have been next to impossible to prevent revolution in Russia and without World War One taking place it would have taken much longer for the Romanvo density to fall. The cost of the war economically was huge; money for essentials such as hospitals, munitions, and uniforms had to be raised so the government imposed high taxes, and also borrowed money from different countries. When Michael refused the Duma set up a provisional government with Prince Lvov as Premier and the 300year reign of the Romanvos was over. Also when the soldiers and refugees from the lost Russian land returned further strain was upon resources. " (Eyewitness, 1986, Spotlight on Russian Revolution, page 40. The main reason for these defeats was the in spite of the courage of the Russian soldiers; only 25 per cent of them were armed and also poorly trained, some reports even state that some of them were sent to battle without any shoes. During World War One Russia suffered great military loses which led to low morale and mutiny in the Russian military. " (Alexander Michaelovich, 1986, Spotlight on Russian Revolution, page 41) Hence with these events taking place it would have been nearly impossible for a revolution to over throw the Romanvos not to take place. After the collapse of the Romanvos Russia went through many stages of revolution and change which finally led to a communist society. Plots against the Tsar grew and the army started to become mutinous and the Tsar friends warned him that revolution was likely. After World War One many revolutions took place that were expected to that started to change Russia into a Communist country. The people celebrated in the streets, believing that the war would be over soon, prices reduced, wages increased, the land given up for the peasants and a democratic republic set up. After this battle, Russia found its self losing battles and men and also losing Russian territory.
