Eddie Murphy vs. Kafka
When we look at Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis and compare it to a modern day movie such as The Nutty Professor we can see great similarities and differences between the two plots. Both stories involve a character who either intentionally or not is physically transformed, and perhaps changed psychologically as well. The stories both go on to explain the dilemma which is brought about by their change and if and how it affects the people around them. Finally there is the outcome, the lesson learned both in the main character as well as the people around them that we discover at the end of these stories. The most apparent metamorphosis in both these stories are the physical transformations that take place in the characters. This metamorphosis involves a change in the characters appearance and the way other characters see them. For example in Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," Gregor wakes up one morning to find that he has curiously turned into a beetle. His entire body has actually been transformed into that of an insect, right down to the hard protective shell and multiple thin legs. "His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, waved helplessly before his eyes" (Kennedy and Gioia 296
" Because of his drastically different personality, he is able to fool the people around him even though they never get to see both Buddy and Klump together. Her loving care sustains him, and when she abandons him (in Part III), he loses his grip on life" (Sylvan, Morton and William Burto 69). "Lonely and smitten, Sherman decides to become a human guinea pig in hopes of improving his romantic prospects" (Brennan 1). "The miracle potion conjures up the trim, obnoxious, oversexed Buddy Love" (Brennan 1). His father hits him and chases him back into his room whenever he happens to be out. cgi?itemid=9980057331542&action=viewad&page=1&placeonpage=3&totaldisplayed=25&categoryid=9990057318319. Towards the end of the movie they notice the bad effects of this new personality and realize he's become almost a completely different person who ends up trying to permanently do away with Klump by downing enough potion to make the change a permanent one. Like Gregor, Eddie has an obvious physical transformation. Gregor's parents reject him, and keep him locked up. However since his metamorphosis he has hardly left his room but twice only to be chased back in by his family. Throughout both stories we can also see a change in the characters as we follow them through to the end, perhaps a lesson learned or different feeling and way of thinking at the end as well as consequences. New York, NY: Harper Collin College Publishers, 1993. In Gregor's case, his transformation into an insect is a permanent one; the rest of the story goes on with the fact that Gregor is no longer a human but an insect. Excited, the professor decides to try the potion himself to see if it is effective on humans as well, perhaps now he will have a chance with a new female professor who he has come to know.
