Cabaret
The Cabaret is a musical that takes place in the Kit Kat Club in Berlin in 1931 during Hitlers rise to power. The 2 main characters-Sally Bowles & Brian Roberts- were both Americans who traveled to Berlin with seperate dreams. Sally has high hopes and desires to move up the entertainment ladder. She lives each day hoping to break into the movies and each night performing at the Kit Kat Club. Brian is hunting for German students to whom he can teach English-to pay his rent. The setting of Cabaret, pre-war Germany, in inherently fascinating, because of the events occurring and what they led to. Society on all levels is in a state of instability, with extreme behavior being demonstrated in the political, commercial,
The last line of the song reads, 'if you could see her through my eyes, she wouldn't look Jewish at all. Throughout the entire movie songs at the Cabaret are spin offs of what is actually happening in the actors lives. The smoky club is a spiritual home to many who wish to escape, if only for a few hours, the threats and dangers of the unstable outside world of Germany. In an analogous fashion, the nightclub maintains a similar illusion-that life on the inside is beautiful while chaotic and disorderly outside. In this clip, the MC is dancing with 2 women, which is supposed to represent the love triangle between Sally, Brian, and Maximillian , who becomes a friend, confidant, and lover to both Sally & Brian. This atmosphere of upheaval is extremely attractive to Sally because it provides her with somewhere that barriers can be broken. Through effective application of an assortment of scenes, the stage routines provide a counterpart to !real life drama. Sally becomes pregnant, but is unsure of who the father is because she was with both men. She eventually has an abortion because Max returns to his wife and she realizes Brian does not love her the way she loves him. The Master of ceremonies dances with a gorilla professing his love of her to the audience. This hard shell is a mere impression though, and is easily punctured when things don't turn out quite right and events spiral out of her control. Fuelled by selfishness and a desire to better herself, she is content to sleep around, use others and do almost anything in pursuit of success.
