Dreams
"It is impracticable, however, to keep our sleep free from stimuli; they impinge upon the sleeper from all sides- like the germs of life which Mephistopheles complained- from without and from within and even from parts of his body which are quite unnoticed in waking life. Thus sleep is disturbed; first one corner of the mind is shaken into wakefulness and then another; the mind functions for a brief moment with its awakened portion and is then glad to fall asleep once more. Dreams are a reaction to the disturbance of sleep brought about by a stimulus- a reaction, incidentally, which is quite superfluous."-Sigmund Freud. Dreams are something that many know very little about. Some people are baffled that while asleep their mind is flowing with vivid images that, if lucky, will be remembered when they awaken. Dreams are anything from absurd to haunting, fascinating to life altering. It is said that we spend four years of our life in the Dream State. People usually formulae their own opinions on dreams. Some believe them to foreshadow future or past events, and some people simply think that they mean nothing at all. Freud thought that every dream was in some way connected to bodily needs. Freud also believed that dreams
Dreams are just about sex-Freud believed that dreams often consisted of buried sexual symbols, and the dreams contained symbols that could possibly surface problems that are hidden by repression. Freud perceived dreams as problem solving mechanisms. There are eight common misconceptions about dreams. I think I believe these things because it is just something to believe in. Telling someone your dreams will just show him/her how messed up! you are-Dreams are more than simple messages that can be decoded in order to tell you what they mean. I think that when I dream of a buffalo, I will have good luck. Adults dream approximately 3 to 5 times per night (which is, on average, eight hours). I'm incapable of remembering my dreams-Like anything, if you work at it, you will get better. I only dream once a night- this is untrue because you enter REM sleep three to five times a night, so you can have at least three dreams a night. Therefore, the body cannot move dur!ing dreams. Also, the cerebral cortex-the part of the brain involved in higher mental functions- is much more active during REM sleep than during nondreaming sleep. For example, the idea to write the book Frankenstein came to author Mary Shelley in a dream.
