Harper Lee was born Nelle Harper Lee on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville,
Alabama. Huntingon College is where she first started her college eduacation in 1944 to
1945. In 1945 she went to the University of Alabama to study law. She also attended
Oxford University for a short time ("Lee,(Nelle) Harper"1).
After quitting her job as a clerk with Eastern Airlines and BOAC in New York
City, Harper Lee concentrated on her writing. In1957 J.B. Lippincott Company looked
over a manuscript of a novel Lee had submitted. "She was told that her novel consisted of
a series of short stories strung together, and she was urged to remove it" (Harper Lee
Biography"1). Then in 1960 a novel by the name of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
was published ( Harper Lee Biography"1). Ver quickly, this novel became " one of the
best-loved classics of all times" (Preface to To Kill a Mockingbird" 1). To Kill a
Mockingbird also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 (Pine,1).
To Kill a Mockingbird was Haper Lee's only novel, but she continued to write
essays and articles. Some of these articles included " Love--In Other Words" in Vogue
Magazine and "Christmas to me" in McCall's Magazine (Harper Lee Biography" 2).
The movie takes place in a small Alabama town in the 1930's, in which it
somewhat parallels Nelle Harper Lee's life. In the outskirts of the town square is where
Scout, Jem, and Dill play all day, while Atticus spends all day at the town courthouse
working on the Trial of the Century.
