Evil and Good in Animal Farm
George Orwell's Animal Farm is an allegorical story which criticizes Communist Russia under Joseph Stalin's rule. It contains many allusions to Communist Russia that directly relate to the central theme of the novel: evil can prevail over good, especially when applied to government. Animal Farm's theme of evil prevailing over good is important to society because it shows how easy it is for a powerful leader to oppress the common people, like Joseph Stalin in Communist Russia. The central theme of Animal Farm is that evil government prevails while good is oppressed as long as the majority of the citizens are kept ignorant. After Old Major's speech of unity, the animals set out to form a Socialist utopia. Sadly, the pigs that gain control become corrupt by their newfound power, and they begin to act like the humans who were kicked off the farm in the first place. The oppression of the animals i
The theme of evil prevailing over good is seen repeatedly throughout the novel. This criticism is important because it teaches the evils of ignorance, and how ignorance leads to oppression. This mirrors Stalin's banishment of Trotsky, Stalin's main competitor. The manipulation of the word "equal" leads to further oppression of the common animals by the pigs in control. However, he also points out the fact the it is the animals' own ignorance that leads to their oppression. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Another example of the pigs' wickedness can be seen by the betrayal of Boxer, Napoleon's most loyal worker. While many people believed that Stalin was a hero after World War II, Orwell recognized and criticized Stalin's oppressive government. The novel could even be used as a tool for propaganda: on a once peaceful farm, communism results in a dictatorship of the worst imaginable outcome. Squealer's propaganda keeps the animals from protesting Napoleon's criminal actions. Animal Farm's importance is based on Orwell's incorporation of complex ideas and social criticisms into a simple, easy-to-read story. Throughout the novel, Orwell uses allusions to Communist Russia, which criticize Stalin's dictatorship. Though an easy read, Animal Farm is a fantastic novel that indirectly criticizes Stalin's Communist Russia. A prime example of this is when Napoleon banishes Snowball from Animal Farm. When Boxer is too old to work he is sen!t to the glue factory, instead of being allowed to retire.
