Teen Suicide
Suicide, the act of intentionally killing oneself, has become an increasingly more common and serious issue among teens who tend to experience problems psychologically dealing with hardships in their life. Too often, do I see in the daily news suicides that have resulted from a complicated reason that was outside of the teen's control, such as divorce, family alcoholism, domestic violence or even sexual abuse. For all of these reasons, suicide has become the ninth leading cause of death in the United States, with 31,204 suicides in 1995. Most teenagers pass through their adolescence with a few bruises and scars but no lifetime problems. But, a few find darkness in life, resulting to their decision of suicide. In this paper I will be searching for the psychological concept of adolescent suicide among different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I am trying to find similarities between cultural influences and individuals who commit suicide, then come up with a final reason why teens commit suicide. I will talk about numerous reasons that cause suicidal behavior like: health problems, feelings of loneliness, abuse either mentally or physically, emotional problems and drug/alcohol abuse. Th
We learn from the articles that another reason of suicide is having a poor perception of your health. I have heard there is a large percent of people that attempt suicide but fail and I would like to know if it is because they can't go through with it or is it because of other reasons. In many countries rates of suicide among youths have increased during the last three decades, and suicide now ranks as a leading cause of death among young people. The article also talks about the importance of seeking counseling for depression if you have suicidal thoughts. Some people think it is coincidence but I believe there are certain societal influences behind suicide. From these articles, we can see the cultural differences that cause suicide. I feel that we can decrease the number of suicides if adolescents don't feel alienated, and the number of people who abuse alcohol diminishes. Out of all the countries in the world China is the one with the highest suicide rate. In one of the articles dealing with a longitudinal study of 9,679 Norwegian adolescents, I found that only 2. " For future studies on this topic, I would suggest researching what cultures have a very low rate of teen suicide and explain why and what cultural differences bring about the low suicide rates. Unlike the western countries where suicide is a result of depression or psychological disorders. Even though there is less suicides in Norway, there are common bonds between the causes and reasons that lead to their suicide attempts. For example the article states that less acculturated Asian youths are at a proportionally greater risk for suicide under conditions of conflict then they would be if they were living in Asia. Since physical health is highly valued, by most the thought that you are sick or have a terminal disease is something that could lead to suicide. e rate of teen suicide has risen significantly over the past decades and I will attempt to link certain cultural differences to that.
