Sex, Durgs and Rock and Roll Revisited

Adam Dannenberg Psychology 102 3/15/01Summary of a Professional Journal Article Today's teenagers differ from the teenagers of the past in that society has changed dramatically. In Victor C. Strasburger's journal article "Sex, Drugs, Rock 'N' Roll Revisited", originally in Clinical Pediatrics, Nov. 2000, Vol. 39 Issue 11, p.657, his overviews are on today's issues that teenager's face in the United States. He discusses teenage violence, the abuse of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking, and the topic of sexual activity and sex education and the concern of all of these to the nation. Is today's generation of teenagers more into what of the past generations of teenagers did and now know is wrong, but not while they were doing it? Or is it the way that society has changed and the way they are adapting to its changes? Today compared to the past is a totally different. There has been changes in everything we do, in what we wear, how we think and act, what is viewable on TV and heard on the radio, what we say, and the technological advances that we have discovered. Strasburger said, "Yes, juvenile violence has actually decreased in the late 1990s,(n1) but now we have a very new and real phenomeno

In this article there are many points that I agree with. The United States has gotten so caught up on the fact that money is more important that they overlook the welfare of today's youth, as well as the older generations to make out in the dollar department. In most cases every program that begins involving money that deals with these topics ends quickly because of lack of funding. Why, if societies knows so much about how to prevent all that is wrong with teenagers today, then why not put a stop to the violence, the drugs and alcohol, and the unprotected sex? If TV and movies are creating mass confusion on what is reality and what is not then why not put an end to all of these violent, sex oriented, drug related stories that are viewable to a all ages, no matter what age restrictions a set on them? Why are there cartoons on TV that have grade school children swearing, with cartoon characters acting out violence, kids killing kids in the news and on the radio, and sex on every channel, no matter what type of show or movie is on? I'll tell you why, it sells. "(n2) Next he said, "We try to scare them away from sex, too, and with HIV and AIDS, it's a lot easier than it used to be! Yet nearly 40 studies show that comprehensive sex education makes kids smarter about sex but doesn't increase their rates of sexual activity. He also thinks that today's society knows so much about how to protect today's teenagers from violence, drugs, and sexual activity, yet they do little or nothing about it. " Today's society has become more violent and materialistic. Sex education was learned through experimenting along with drugs and alcohol and violence. Sad but true, Strasburger also said, "We would ask the President why there are no anti-alcohol ads and so very few anti-smoking ads on TV, why so many Hollywood stars smoke and drink on screen,(n3) and why Congress took $30 million in payoffs last year to avoid having to pass any meaningful tobacco reform legislation. Sadly, abstinence-only sex education programs can only delay the onset of sex for a few months,(n6) yet we allow the Federal government to spend $59 million a year on them. Many teenagers do now what was not heard of in the past. " He also said, "Marijuana and cocaine are dangerous drugs, yes, but they are not killing teenagers. Parties, concerts, movies, radio, and the outside world were my teachers in these subjects, and also for many people that I know and have met in life and in my college experiences. Who would have thought 20 years ago that society would be as it is today?By Adam Dannenberg ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. " If this is going then how could anyone do anything about all of this? Drug and alcohol prevention, sex education, and teachings of tolerance to violence were very limited in my years of schooling.
