Plato
When asked to complete this assignment, I had a difficult time deciding on which methodology I was to use to approach a paper on a famous philosopher. After hours of deliberation, I came to the conclusion that I was going to write on Plato. Not only was I going to write on him, I was going to attempt on understanding or at least appreciating where he was coming from. I saw myself being able to better comprehending his ideas by taking them one by one and dissecting them, until I was able to conclude with my on opinion, whether in concurrence or not. I am able to do so thanks to Plato's Dictionary. This book mimicked a traditional dictionary in that is took words and concepts that Plato used and attached to them his definition. So I thought it creative and useful, on a personal basis, to select certain ideas of his and attempt to rationalize his perception of them. So, what you are going to read is a sample of Plato's/Jennifer's ideology on various words (belief, desire, l!Plato, considered on of the three greatest philosophers of all time aside from Socrates and Aristotle, was said to be born on or around May 27, 427 (428) B.C. in Athens. Son of Ariston and Peictione, both of Athenian aristocratic ancestr
My reasoning for saying so, is that I am unable to conceptualize this notion or grasp the idea, I believe or accept the phrase, but am unable to explain why. As oppose to knowledge which in most instances is a universal fact, leaving no room for right and wrong, rather right or wrong. )? But of all the lines read written by Plato I must agree strongly with the next few lines. My personal favorite is his view on love. I am assuming that he see the body as being made up of two intities, flesh and mind, one needing physical nourishment, the other! needing a more abstract feeding, that of wisdom. The mere idea that, there is belief without knowledge, to me speaks for itself. At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet, even though he had no music in him before; this also is a proof that Love is a good poet and accomplished in all the musical arts; for no one can give to another that which he has not himself, or teach that of which he has no knowledge-Symposium, 196. This is what many people deal with today, does he love me for me, or is does he love me for what I have to offer (money, security, etc. What Plato is saying is that desire is, that which is a nesecity for life. So not only should we feed the physical but also the spiritual elements of our being. He had many interesting things to say pertaining love. As the word is used in everyday language, desire has rotted itself infront of any noun, this term simply maximizes the meaning, giving it a more intense feeling. As f!or the latter portion of his definition, belief, not knowledge, can be simultaneously right and wrong, this the phrase that caught my attention.
