Maslow & McGregor

For this assignment I will be discussing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory and McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. To begin with, Maslow developed his Hierarchy Theory over a period of many years during the mid twentieth century. Maslow's levels included: 1. Physiological needs: This aspect refers to the general required necessities for functioning in life. In organizational contexts it pertains to the salary or wage which ultimately help one attain these necessities.2. Safety needs: These needs help us develop a sense of security from elements which may threaten us. Again this can be seen in salary, as it provides us with the means to shelter ourselves, and set up any kind of safety "netting" that we may need.3. Affiliation needs: As the Beatles once said "all you need is love", and I firmly believe that everyone needs some degree of affection. In the organizational setting this can be very important, as you will be spending a great deal of your life at work, to develop social ties.4. Esteem needs: This refers to the individuals need of accomplishment /satisfaction. Esteem needs are divided into two contexts: internal, and external.5. Need for self-actualization: In short Maslow defines this level as a need to "be all that

Every man and woman has a conscious need to survive, and I feel that this is what these two levels basically come down to. " However day in and day out, repetitive jobs can be a motivation killer. Furthermore that under the proper conditions, the average human being learns not only to accept, but to seek responsibility. I think it is important to surround yourself with people who do inspire you, or else you may fall into that rut of "I'm satisfied with getting by. Finally we come to self actualization. Esteem needs are the next component of maslow's theory. In the organizational setting it can be quite advantageous, and sometimes almost necessary to have "contacts" if not friends. Furthermore it provides a degree of support which also can be very advantageous if the employee has a good deal of autonomy. In my experience I find all of these levels to be just and pertinent. "Next I will discuss Douglas McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. In my experience I would say that these things make me pretty happy. While I have known people who are like this and have inspired me, for the most part (in my organization), in the subordinates that I supervise this is not evident. But if I had to draw on my experience I would have to say that I am a Theory Y type manager, but I am not surprised in the least when my expectations are not met. While the Theory Y manager can be characterized as optimistic. While McGregor's theory is to broad to be tested I find it very interesting in relation to the organization.
