Fitzgeralds the great gatsby
When analyzing Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" is almost impossible not to be appalled by the characters materialistic personalities. It is evident from the beginning chapters that money and social status makes this novel go round. As a result we see the American Dream become the American Nightmare through corruption. Fitzgerald satirizes this corruption through the characters in the novel that are all in one way or another searching for a false happiness. Only to end with no contentment at all and a disenchantment in the American dream. In the commencement of chapter one, we are introduced to the lavish lifestyle of Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Although one would look at their living as affluent and perfect it is revealed to be far from that. In spite of the money, big house, beautiful wife and butler Tom is dissatisfied. "Tom's got some woman in New York." It is not clear weather Tom is unhappy with his marriage with Daisy or just not satisfied with the life he has and decides to create another one. Daisy is unhappy with her life as well and portrays this in her forged personality "I'm p-paralyzed with happiness" She laughed again, as if she said something very witty." Daisy leads on that she has never stopped loving Gatsby but qu
However what they don't see is that their lives are really empty, meaningless, and far from happy. In the end Nick is faced with a reality that he didn't have to judge because those who had judged those who didn't and those who didn't have judged themselves for not having. Gatsby becoming quite wealthy through bootlegging throws lavish parties and buys expansive shirts in hope of finally winning Daisy "He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many-colored disarray. Although dreams give us something to look forward to and motivate us it constantly conflicts with reality leaving one disappointed. Lastly we have Nick Carraway character is very different from the mentioned characters. He sees people with money and without. " Myrtle goes through many extremes to convert her poor life into that of a rich one, only to end up being treated viciously by Tom and later murdered by his wife. Gatsby unlike Tom Buchanan is not born into wealth but is forced to create his own wealth in anticipation of captivating true happiness with Daisy. In conclusion it seems that through this novel Fitzgerald wanted American to see that the great dream was no longer driving us to be the best. " This bit of advice from Nick's father keeps him grounded throughout life until he visits his corrupt cousin who introduces him to a world full of the false American Dreams. He was born into wealth however money never made him. In addition to the Buchanan's we see Tom's Mistress Myrtle Wilson who is a part of the lower class yet desires the life style of the upper class. The Buchanan's life of prosperity and comfort is what American's strive for every day. Moreover, what America needs to do is wake up and realize that the American Dream is unobtainable and is nothing more than a dream.
