Wagner's Thoughts on Christianity and Anti-Semitism
WAGNER'S THOUGHTS ON CHRISTIANITY AND ANTI-SEMITISMII. POLITICAL AND SOCIAL INFLUENCES 4-5V. SPIRITUAL & RACIAL CONCEPTS IN HIS MUSIC 8-9The thoughts and ideas of Richard Wagner, in relation to anti-Semitism and Christianity, are linked not only to the social atmosphere he grew up in, but also to the writers and dramatists of that era whose works influenced and inspired many of his own. Although there are some conflicting statements written by him on these two subjects, the overall messages are of similar content. WAGNER AND ANTI-SEMITISMIn 1827 the Wagner family moved back to Leipzig from Dresden. POLITICAL AND SOCIAL INFLUENCESDuring the 19th and 20th centuries Germany was seen by many as being one of the most culturally developed countries in the western world, but the Classic-Romantic era was coming to a close, and political unrest and tension had begun to grow. Large, David & William Weber, et al. Wagner's origin of racial concepts in a social and political context came from various influential European philosophers, musicians, and writers. Rousseau also disagreed with Catholicism, since it was a 'creed which transcended national boundaries'. This perfect 'universal society' would surpass and exceed all other religions, as well as nationalism. WAGNER AND CHRISTIANITY Wagner held conflicting views on Christianity; on one hand he thought it was damaging to German 'Volk' and German culture (Catholicism in particular) and wrote many anti-Christian sentiments, but in other essays and writings he expresses a deep Christian feeling of love for the 'brotherhood of man'.
