Just War Theory
In a time of war, it is often times hard to think about anything but the problem at hand.People don't even stop to think if resorting to war is the right thing to do or not. However, twoChristian leaders who were known as, Ambrose of Milan and Augustine of Hippo came up withthe idea of the just war theory, St. Thomas Aquinas supported their theory. This theory is adetermining factor or whether or not a war is "just" or "unjust." There are seven criteria in whicha war has to fit in order to be deemed just. The seven are, Just Cause, Competent Authority,Comparative Justice, Right Intention, Last Resort, Probability of Success, and Proportionality. World War 1 and World War 2 are two examples or war where a person could try to answer thequestions in order to find out if it fall under the just war category. In this paper, it is discussedwhether or not French involvement in World War 2 would be considered the right action, by Is there Just Cause? Yes, historically, the danger of the war to France was very real.Ever since the fall of Napoleon, France has fallen as country, militarily and politically. "In orderto take on countries as strong and powerful as Germany and I
If Francewanted to keep their country and their power, then yes they had no choice. "But then again, a lot of European countries andJapan as well were badly injured, economically, politically and militarily" (www. So in the end, France had the rightto attack, in defense of themselves. There was no competent authoritypresent in France. And since Hitler and Mussolini were wrongfully executing people and stealing themaway from families, that it is reason enough to fight for. France played very fairly in this whole situation; they stayed neutraluntil they were attacked, and then since they couldn't peacefully come to agreement, they gaveback to Germany and Italy, exactly what they gave to France. was later involved but chose to stay out until they absolutely had to fight. According to the just war theory, theoretically, the danger is also real, seeing as how the theory deals with the ethical justificationof the war. Countries like Great Britain (United Kingdom) did just that, they helped to support France in itstime of need. But, in the end, no country hadany other chance but to take down those who chose to fight.
