why shoot it up
Devastation and shock waves permeated throughout the sports world when Canadian track superstar Ben Johnson was denied his gold medal at the 1998 Olympics after tests showed he had taken steroids. The incident brought international attention to the use of steroids among world-class athletes to gain competitive advantage. Yet, even after seeing the humiliation that Johnson endured, athletes and non-athletes both persist in taking them. Teenagers are taking steroids not just to excel in sports, but also to enhance their self-images. Without harming ones' health and without cheating, there are other ways to be a winner athletically and socially. Although many athletes are aware of the positive physical effects associated with steroid use, many do not know about the negative effects that may also occur. Anabolic steroids are the type of steroids that most athletes use to make them excel in sports. Anabolic steroids are synthetic compounds formulated to act like the male sex hormone testosterone (Meer 68). The two typical forms of anabolic steroids can be taken orally or can be injected into the bloodstream. Anabolic steroids aid body growth, defeat the effects of a female hormone, and cause physical feat
The negative effects can lead to physical injuries and may become addicting. The effects of anabolic steroids on woman can be astonishing and dramatic. " (Meer 71) The disturbance of men's hormones may cause a man to develop female breasts. "A recent report in the medical journal, The Lancet, noted that one 40-year old man developed prostate cancer, perhaps related to his 18 years of using anabolic steroids. Since they were on steroids, they thought it would benefit the team. Some of the effects of steroids on men and women are similar, but the physical effects may differ. Women taking birth control pills while on steroids can increase the danger of certain cancers and may lead to giving birth to deformed or handicapped children (Goldman 49). Some women stop menstruating completely, while others find that their periods are irregular (Meer 71). Athletic teens give many reasons for their evident steroid use, many of which deal with their social environments. Some adolescents, eager to excel in athletics, reject alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Steroids leave stretch marks and may thin the skin of the face, making blood vessels appear more prominent and unsightly (Goldman 45). These hormones are harmful to healthy functioning of a woman's menstrual cycle. Annese 4Eight percent, and perhaps as many as 18%, of the male students has taken them. The teenage years are filled with experimentation, searching, confusion, rebellion, poor self-image, and insecurity (Hanson 439).
