a seperate peace
Throughout the book A Separate Peace we see many of Knowles characters struggling with different aspects of their lives. One prevalent battle these characters are fighting is that between the savage, and civilized nature. These characters choose to either become the savage or choose to follow the path of civilized nature. One character who truly exemplifies this battle quite literally is Leper. In the beginning Leper is so well mannered and polite. Then he enlists in the army coming back harsh and bitter. When Gene comes to seem him he sees a tremendous change in him. He is so short tempered not like the Leper he once knew he begins to think "...Leper was deranged, he was not of sound mind..." (pg. 164). Leper finds himself giving into the savage. Leper finally comes to realize the realities of the war and how he and his classmates have been just putting it off or setting the real world aside with Finny's actions. Brinker is also someone who comes to realize the savage side. He does this by trying to find out what reall
This book deals with many different natures such as the savage nature with Leper and Brinker and their actions, then it deals with the more civilized nature with Finny's different things to try and escape reality, but then it also deals with a character who knows the benefits of both sides of the natures and doesn't want to choose out of either one of them. But Finny brings out Genes competitive nature and when he does this Gene doesn't feel so well anymore because he realizes that he is clumsy. Finny doesn't want to take the realization of things, such as the time when Gene went to confess that he was the one to make him fall. On the other side of the story there is the imaginative side where Finny is trying to have the kids of Devon High School put the realization of the world aside and focus on the fun parts of life dealing with sports and other activities like that. The first time and the only time that he tells of his feelings about the war is to Gene towards the end. Brinker and Leper are there to remove Gene from this fantasy world that Finny has got him involved him and all this does to Gene is make him afraid and brings out the worst in him. On the other side that brings the realization of the war and life is through Leper he tells Gene the truth about war and what he had to deal within the war. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Finny brings out Gene's competitive side. Gene is the main character in this book and this is a wonderful idea because he sees both sides of the story and is never just on one side of the war or anything. The civilized side is the side that Phineous rules. Gene's imaginative side comes to him by Finny's acts. This affects Gene just as much or even more than how it affected Finny.
