The Second Foundation
"Men can fly through the air like birds, and swim through the seas like fish. When will we walk the earth as brothers and sisters?" -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For centuries, the human race has been divided by their differences. Men are killed because they look differently or believe different things. Differences between men have caused wars, and created new countries. The United States was founded by men who were discriminated against because of their differences. The Pilgrims uprooted their entire lives and traveled halfway across the world to gain freedom from persecution. Jealousy can be a very powerful feeling when held in the hands of the masses. Because of the confidence placed in the Foundationers by Hari Seldon that they would secede the original Galactic Empire, they original felt invincible. However, as time went on, the threat of the "mythical" Second Foundation, full of mind-readers, and emotion-controllers, the people of the Foundation became increasingly threatened by their lack of psychological power. This led to a jealousy and fear of the Second Foundation, instead of the companionship that Seldon had hoped for. In !Second Foundation, by Isaac Asimov, fear leads to the near breakdown of an entire empire.
First Foundation began as a colony of physical scientists, whose future was planned to create a new and lasting empire that would span the galaxy. Darrel's fear is seen quite literally in the case of slavery. He discovered that in the stages of evolution that the Second Foundation was supposed to be in, they should have the power to control the emotions of any man, women, child, or even an entire planet. However, when both countries discovered that he was a traitor, he was executed. The Second Foundation was formed to ensure that the First Foundation would take the proper course in doing so. This immense power and difference from himself led him to ignore the fact that the Second Foundation had been designed to assist the First Foundation in creating a new empire, and caused him to believe that if given time, the Second Foundation would destroy the first, in an attempt to proclaim themselves as the leaders of the Empire. This realization caused them to fear the power of the Second Foundation, and created a deeply entrenched hatred of the Second Foundation. He f!ought to teach the world this lesson through peaceful demonstrations and inspiring speeches, instead of through violence as most men would have done. The case of Benedict Arnold is much like that of the Rosenbourghs. This fear has made them feel threatened and therefore made the defensive. The idea never crossed his mind, and has not crossed the mind of men for millennia, that the men he feared might not have the motives that he suspected in mind. When the United States found this out, the Rosenbourghs were executed, and all their secrecy was lost. The "uncivilized" tribes of Africa were infiltrated by the Europeans with superior weapons and knowledge, and because of their differences in culture and beliefs were taken hostage and turned into slaves for centuries to come. However, all of their secrets were exposed, and their plans were destroyed. The First Foundation was created to directly form the new empire by using the traditional conquering techniques.
