Young goodman brown
For this story analysis I am going to write about "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I want to focus on two aspects that I feel are the most important in giving this story it's meaning, they are, setting and Character. "Young Goodman Brown", is a story that takes place in the colonial town of Salem, Massachusetts. As the story begins we are introduced to the main character, Young Goodman brown. Even with his name we gain instant insight to what type of person this man is. "Young" may signify the character being young in his way of thinking, somewhat new to the ways of the world. "Goodman" is used to signal us to that he is a righteous man, full of virtue. "Brown" being a very common name is used to show that it could be anyone. The next character we are introduced to is a bit of a mystery. He is an older gentleman around 50years old, simply dressed but as the story states "he had an indescribable air of one who knew the world", this adds to the mystery of the man's identity. The footnotes also make an observation of the man's speed. He says that the clock of the Old South, was striking as he came through Boston. The old S

The setting of this story was essential in the crating of the mood and giving a fitting backdrop to the evil at hand. Hawthorne paints a very vivid picture making one feel as if though the woods were alive with a sinister presents. Now it would have been impossible to get from Boston to Salem on foot in fifteen minutes. Young is at a proverbial crossroads of his moral life, of choosing the world (or Satan) or his faith, which could also be represented by his wife by the same name. As the two men walk into the woods the nature of their mysterious journey and the man's puzzling identity become clear. At one point it is referred to as a "desert", leading some to think of this as an oxymoron, but it could be interpreted as a place where noting good could be found, empty or void of life. outh he is talking about is the Old South Park Church, which is in the corner street of the Boston Common. In the end all these elements are used to transport a person back in time and into the woods with Young Goodman Brown, to be tempted as Christ was tempted . At times we put people on very high pedestals and when those people fall from the heights from which we have placed them then the way we react will most likely be the same way he reacted. The setting reminds me a lot of the Blair witch project as well as countless other Hollywood horror movies where the poor unsuspecting girl falls prey to the homicidal maniac's machete . All these elements in the end work together to give the reader an enjoyable reading experience. He is told of all these people that are in alliance with the devil, people that he looked up to and respected, for their holy and exemplary lives. As with the witch trials, men and woman who most likely never worshiped the devil were accused of doing so, we kind of have the same thing going on here but reversed, with Young Goodman Brown defending people who were really Satan worshipers. Which in turn allows for the reader to feel like he or she is a part of the story and helping the reader identify with the characters in the story.
