The Tragic Hero of Julius Caesar

             William Shakespeare was the greatest playwright the world has ever known. Shakespeare was born on St. George's Day in the spring of 1564 in Stratford. William was raised in a very disciplined home and was educated in the Elizabethan School where the children were expected to be able to speak the language of Latin at age eight. William married a woman who was eight years older than himself and pregnant with William's baby when he was only eighteen-years-old. William's wife was named Anne Hathaway from Shotery. Ten years later in 1592, William was in London ready to begin his incredible career as the world's most famous playwright. In twenty years William Shakespeare produced thirty-seven plays. The more recognizable plays of the thirty-seven include Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, The Tempest, and Othello. However, this essay will be discussing Julius Caesar, which was Shakespeare's first play he produced in his Globe Theater. Julius Caesar is the story of a seemingly noble usurpation of power. Julius Caesar holds control over the army which causes his sudden rise to power in Rome. The senators of Rome see this rise of Caesar as a move in the direction towards a dictatorship which is apparently the worst thing in the world for most of the senators of Rome. So to prevent Caesar from becoming the dictator, or King of Rome, some of the senators formed a conspiracy against Caesar and murder him. What causes the conspiracy to succeed but at the same time also causes their downfall is Marcus Brutus, a senator of Rome who is very honest and well respected by the people of Rome. Brutus is the one who gives nobility to face of the conspiracy; throughout the beginnings of the play Brutus does nothing except think about whether to accept the offer of Caius Cassius, another senator of Rome who is not as regarded as Brutus, to join him in a conspiracy to prevent the rise of a supreme ruler, king, and dictator by killing Julius Caesar.
