The novel "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton was based on two juvenile gangs. These gangs were divided by economical and social background, the lower East side where known as the "Greasers", and the upper West side were known as the "Socs". The novel is set in 1966 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This novel was based on the main character Ponyboy Curtis, who faces many struggles, which are very serious to society. This really kept the reader at the edge of their seat with a whole lot of emotion towards the book.
             After completing the novel "The Outsiders" my thoughts that best described this book would be baffled and depressing. This story was very depressing for the main character Ponyboy. Ponyboy was 14, and grew up in poverty without his parents. He lived with his two older brothers Sodapop and Darry. Ponyboy's very confused boy w/ no one to really to look up to but fellow gang members, his best friend Johnny and him get into a small scuffle with the "Socs" kill an enemy, and have to go in hiding. With Ponyboy losing his 2 closest friends to gang related violence. Not having any parents, and living in poverty. I think this is very depressing. This book also baffled me. I was baffled because all of the violence, killing, and action. When Dalley at the end of the story went nuts after Johnny died.It baffled me that he held up the store, and got smoked by the police.
             If I were in the story I would have tried to help Ponyboy avoid gang violence. I think that the neighbor hood that he was apart of ruined him. The people who he hung around with, and the scenes of the street he saw everyday made it extremely hard for him to live a normal Life. If I were apart of the sory I wopuld have kept him away from all this. I really admire Johnny. I admire him because he risked his life to save children that he didn't even know. This was very noble of him and it cost him his life.
