Gun Control
Gun control has been a very controversial media topic throughout recent years, which has mainly been sparked by the rash of unfortunate school violence, such as the Littleton, Colorado shootings at Columbine High School in April of 1999. Fourteen students and a teacher lost their lives in the massacre, which gave gun control topics that had been sitting in front of Congress some very heated momentum. With the media's constant display of the tragedy congress was forced to take some sort of action to let the American public feel somewhat at ease that their government was on the ball in getting some sort of law into the making. Advocates of gun control now had some hard evidence to make a stand against gun rights activists. The senate legislation in 1999 applied the mandatory three-day waiting period for background checks of potential gun buyers initiated by the Brady Bill, which was set forth in 1993. The House approved a bill to limit the background check to twenty-four hours, but the bill was shot down after the tragedy in 1999. Now all guns sold ar

They have attempted to limit handgun purchases to one per month and also to raise the legal age limit of ownership of guns from the current age of eight-teen to a proposed age of twenty-one. The National Rifle Association stands behind their firm belief that firearm control measures wouldn't be necessary if lawmakers could just find a way to enforce the current laws they already have set. People are always trying to find a scapegoat to blame things on, and now people are saying that video games and media violence are the cause of the violence committed by children. On the other hand Gun Rights supporters say that these restrictions would violate their second amendment rights as law-abiding citizens. If they want to decrease the crime rate they should go to the source first, the criminals themselves and actually punish them instead of just giving them a slap on the wrist. In my eyes that is completely wrong, they need to look at the parents and upbringing that these kids received before they blame it on something else. I believe that by taking guns away from law-abiding citizens, crime rates in the United States will skyrocket, since criminals will take advantage of people that are not able to protect themselves. e forced to include a safety lock, which will in turn drive up prices of firearms. The National Rifle Association, one of the strongest, if not the strongest of the gun rights support groups, disagrees with this measure by saying that it is just another attack on gun owner's second amendment rights. Lawmakers are also attempting to limit the importation of high-volume ammunition clips manufactured for weapons that are currently being sold in the United States. With all of the stricter gun laws the only thing that will get accomplished will be taking guns from the people that put them to the use for which they were designed, as with hunting and defense. Personally, I was rais!ed using guns when I was very young, but I was taught the right and wrong ways to use them, and I'm not out killing people now. Some gun manufacturers have tried to please the advocates by volunteering to use safety locks with all of their firearms.
