In 2003, almost 74% of adults aged 21 or older reported they had started using alcohol before age 21. How can you expect a law to resonate with the public when the president's own daughter refuses to abide by it? Jenna Bush, the nineteen year old daughter of President George W Bush, is judged to be responsible to vote, drive, marry, serve in the military, have an abortion, incur debt, and be executed (in Texas); then why is she not able to purchase a margarita? The drinking age is an infringement on the rights of 18 year "Adults" across the Nation; they are allowed all other adult responsibilities, except drinking. The law is widely abused because of its unjust nature. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said quoting Saint Augustine, "An unjust law is no law at all." The raising of the drinking age is unjust be cause it denies 18 year old adults the right to drink alcohol, while still holding them to all other adult responsibilities. How can you judge any 18 year old "mature" enough to fight in a war and possibly die in combat, but refuse him the simple pleasure of a beer? How can you say that two eighteen year olds are "mature" enough to be married with all of the responsibilities involved, (bills, children, ect.) and then deny

It has made alcohol a rite of passage by way of binge drinking at 21, Rather than a half glass of wine at the dinner table at 12. If Chapman's mission is lower teenage drinking and driving he needs to change his approach because the current drinking age is not the most logical solution. That it does, changing the drinking age to 18 uniformly keeps the current federally mandated equilibrium. Anecdotal statements by students indicated the belief of some that it "might be easier to hide a little pot in my room than a six pack of beer. Finally, an examination of East Carolina University students' intentions regarding their behavior following passage of the 21-year-age drinking law revealed that only 6% intended to stop drinking, 70% planned to change their drinking location, 21% expected to use a false or borrowed identification to obtain alcohol and 22% intended to use other drugs. Then our plea is to lawmakers, give 18 year olds the benefit of the doubt and lower the drinking age to 18. To that we would counter that there has been a decrease in DUI offenses in all age groups not just teenagers, and that these numbers do not necessarily coincide with the implementation of the law. It has shifted what should be open and accepted to an underground and defiant thrilling act of rebellion. A longitudinal study of the effect of a one-year increase of the drinking age in the State University System of Florida to examine their behavior before and after an increase in the drinking age from 19 to 21. As it stands there is a marked discrepancy in how 18 year olds are judged, either they're adults or they're not. And few people in the United States want to enter the military at all.
