Capital punishment

             Murders occur in almost every society around the world. Criminals convicted of these murders are dealt with in different ways, some of which are sentenced to death. Capital punishment is the most severe form of corporal punishment as it is requires law enforcement officers to kill the offender. It has been banned in many countries, in the United States, for example, an earlier move to eliminate capital punishment has now been reversed and more and more states are resorting to capital punishment for serious offenses such as murder. Capital punishment is one of the most controversial topics among people today since every person has there own opinion on this topic, some believe it should be abolished whereas others believe it should be re-introduced or retained as the case may be. The numbers of problems with the death penalty are enormous and it should be abolished from countries that use it as a method of punishment. Some of these problems include; innocence of the perpet!
             rator, the costs of execution for governments, and the needs of rehabilitation of society. The argument for this method of punishment which states that 'capital punishment is a deterrent of crime' can be easily rebutted with proof that even countries with capital punishment have high crime rates.
             The first major issue is the danger of mistake. In the past, there were many people wrongfully executed for crimes that they did not commit, all in the name of justice. The unique thing about the death penalty is that it is final and irreversible. According to research, in the United States alone, there have been 23 cases of innocent people who have been executed since 1900. The real danger lies when we execute an innocent person; the real killer is still on the streets, ready to victimize someone else.
