Coming to age in Mississippi

             COMING TO AGE IN MISSISSIPPI REPORT
             As I was reading Coming of Age in Mississippi written by Anne Moody published in 1992 tears began to fall from my eyes. Anne Moody was born in Wilkinson County, Mississippi on September 15, 1940. She Attended Nachez Junior College on a basketball scholarship and later graduated from Tougaloo College with a B.S. (1964). During college, became involved in the Civil Rights Movement with organizations like the NAACP, CORE, and SNCC. She was involved in the famous integration of Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in in Jackson, Mississippi. She later participated in the March on Washington when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his famous "I have a dream" speech. She married Austin Stratus and had one child, Sascha. Divorced in 1967. She later moved north, and became increasingly militant, when the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi seemed to be making little progress.
             Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody is the story of her life as a poor black girl growing into adulthood. It depicts life in a rural Mississippi town during the civil rights movement of the 1940's and 1950's. She overcomes obstacles such as discrimination and hunger as she struggles to survive childhood.
             The main character, Anne Moody, always sought a purpose for her life, while she struggled through life's hardships. The autobiography starts when Essie Mae is four years old and portrays her life up to age twenty-four at the end of the book. Essie Mae name changed to Anne when she was a senior in high school when her mom applies for a birth certificate. As a very independent black woman with an abiding faith in God, Moody held her head high through her youthful trials and struggles.
