Television, It's Past and Future

Television, unlike many other modern inventions, did not have a single inventor. There were many people that participated in its creation. Television was, however, created in the United States. One of the men that participated in the invention was Dr. Vladimir Zworykin (Winship 1).

Dr. Zworykin invented the iconoscope in 1923. The iconoscope is the "electric eye" that makes television work (Floherty 14). Therefore, Dr. Zworykin is credited as one of the main inventors of television. Dr. Zworykin did most of his research while working for the RCA Corporation. Another of the main inventors of television is Philo T. Farnsworth. He created the first television transmitter and the first receiver. On September 7, 1927, Philo T. Farnsworth transmitted and received the first television signal. In 1930, Farnsworth was awarded a patent for electronic television . This new type of digital television can be sold to many people in the future. Sarnoff was an executive at RCA and also started the first television network, NBC. Zworykin's research at RCA (Winship 6).

There are many new types of televisions coming out on the market. It operates in almost the same way as an HDTV, except that a special decoder is needed and it is transmitted via satellite. Normal televisions have an image of 4 units by 3 units with 480 lines of electron dots. It includes much more than just the receiver and remote control that sit in the living room. Sarnoff was the underwriter for Dr. HDTV's also have 1,080 lines of electron dots for better resolution, this is six times more!
