Home Depot

Industry Description and Outlook 3Competition: Foreign and Domestic 3Emerging and Foreign Markets 13A Brief History of the Major Player 17 What started out as a simple industry case analysis turned into an exhaustive report. Home Depot, the international leader in the do-it-yourself home improvement industry is second to none. No competitor either foreign or domestic can compete with its size, buying power or brand recognition. Started in 1978 by two poor men, Home Depot now dominates its market in Canada, The United States and South America. It's main competition in domestic markets is Lowe's and they are only 1/3 the size of Home Depot. Bernie and Arthur went on to become the CEO and chairman respectively of the company. Over the years, Home Depot has met with some adversity. Lowe's specializes in offering products and services for home improvement, home decor, home maintenance, home repair and remodeling and maintenance of commercial buildings. Agriculture is the main occupation of about 15% of the population; it accounts for about 10% of the national wealth, and produces less than half of the domestic needs. Many of these categories cross over into products sold through Home Depot's traditional big-box stores, which have already positioned the company as the top-ranking consumer floor-covering provider in the nation. In the grand scheme of retailing there are still relatively new players on the front. Two of Lowe's early successes are paint brands: one carrying the name of designer Laura Ashley; the other under the Olympic brand, known primarily for wood-staining products. Due to the fact that nearly every industry is global, Home Depot should take serious consideration in expanding overseas. The wage for a union carpenter, is much higher than that of the stock boys Lowe's hires. With higher rates and the tightest labor market in three decades, Home Depot is faced with fewer homes being built, which means fewer hammers and nails to be sold. of Puerto Rico (with its main branch at Rio Piedras), the Inter-American University.
