measurment
Measurement is a part of our everyday life. In every aspect of our life there is some type of measurement involved. Middle grade students encounter measurement ideas both in and out of school. Measurement experiences show them practical application of mathematics (Geddes, 1). Measurement involves a comparison of an item that is being measured with a unit that has the same attribute, for example length, volume, or weight. To measure anything meaningfully, the attribute to be measured must be understood. Meaningful measurement and estimation of measurements depend on familiarity with the unit of measure being used. Measurement instruments are devices that replace the need for actual measurement units in making comparisons. Area and volume formulas are ways of using length measures to count the area or volume units in an object with out using actual area or volume units (Van De Walle, 277). After the activities students will understand the attribute being measured, how !filling, covering, matching, or making comparisons of an attribute with units produces what is called measure, and understand the way measuring instruments work (Van De Walle, 278). I have picked out three activities for students to understa
On the worksheet is a chart for students to put their estimations of the object length or width. Students will be able to relate to this activity because it is something they can visualize having done at their own home. The ruler will also be used in the next activity. Students will learn how to use the ruler. Next, students can paste the paper units along the edge of the tagboard. It is also more fun to see how close you are to the actual measurement.
