binge drinking

Time Magazine reports that 240,00 to 360,000 of the current college student body will eventually die of alcohol related causes because of the binge drinking habits that they picked up in their college years. That amount of students would be like the entire student body of one of the top ten ivy league schools dropping dead all at once. Binge drinking is significantly increased during a young persons college career for many reasons; including lack of education about the alcohol, the accessibility of drug, and the fact that for the first time adolescents are on their own. When you combine these reasons it is no wonder that the use of alcohol is associated with the leading causes of death and injury among teenagers and young adults. Education is not used to the fullest extent when drinking is involved. Most school programs are there to teach the students about the consequences of other drugs such as cocaine and marijuana but these programs are rarely focused on the effects of the drug alcohol. These other drug related programs are helping to reduce the use of illegal drugs but the fact remains the 87% of high school seniors have used alcohol in comparison to the 63% that have smoked cigarettes , the 32% who

Another cause of increased binge drinking during the years a student is in college is the accessibility aspect. In most cases the attempt to educate teenage students comes in the form of film stripes; even thought! these stripes can be educational they don‘t always get the point across because they lose the attention of the students who are watching. For the first time in their lives they are pretty much parent free and on their own. In return for not taking that first taste they will be more be less likely to become one of the 39% of teenagers who binge drink by themselves or the 58% who drink to hide their pain when they are upset might help them to decide not to take that first sip. Many of these students who are on their own for the first time get carried away with the freedom and they go overboard. Binge drinking has become a serious problem for our college students today and as a society we must come together and come up with ways to educate young students about the problem, find ways to eliminate availability for those who are under aged, and come up with a way to keep the students accountable. Not only should new stricter punishments be set up but these new restrictions should be seriously enforced. At colleges programs should be set up to help curb the accessibility to students who are not yet twenty-one. With the help of new education programs the age at which most young people take their first drink might be raised to an older age or until they are legally allowed to purchase alcohol. These new education programs might help the mass of youngsters who are about to take their first drink decide against that first sip. These colleges should also create stricter punishments for any one who is found intoxicated but who is not yet of age. have used marijuana and the 6% that have never used cocaine, according to a the new jersey underage drinking prevention coalition. New programs the are more exciting and upbeat need to be implemented in which the students are involved or entertained as well as taught. When a college student lives on campus there is not mush else to do at night on a weekend except to go with the crowd and check out the fraternities. This lack of education is a significant problem considering that the first time a youth drinks is usually around the age of thirteen.
