The Norms, Values and Sanctions of Two Different Classroom
Norms have been devised and maintained by every society throughout history as way to regulate the behavior of its members. Accordingly, certain actions are regarded as acceptable when they are in agreement with the rules, while other actions are considered unacceptable when they are in violation of the rules. Some of these rules have been written down and have severe punishments when violated; these are called formal norms. The ones though we encounter more often are informal norms. They are not codified, yet are widely accepted and understood by all members of that certain society. Because norms vary from society to society, behavior that is considered inadmissible in one society may be satisfactory and common in another.In order for the people in the society to accept and follow the norms presented to them, they must be aware of certain penalties that come with braking the rules. Such discipline is brought about with the pressure of sanctions. Sanctions are enforced in two different ways; positive sanctions reward people for proper behavior, and negative sanctions punish those who engage in misconduct. For my observations school became a group of societies, that is each classroom was considered to be its own communit
While at the same time someone in the honors class would consider himself a failure and would be ashamed to reveal their grade to his fellow students having achieved anything lower than an eighty. Naturally no student can afford that kind of luxury and therefore does not take vacations from doing their homework. By the time the first bell is rung, there is not a single student out of his or her seat and is quietly doing the do now. The sanction in this case is more obvious with every homework that you miss you will get two points subtracted from your final average. The teacher that teaches the honors class collects the students works on the daily basis. y, with its own norms, values, and sanctions. These are the norms that are set by every teacher. The students that I spoke to in that class would not come to school if they are late for that class, because it is easy to make up the work for the rest of the courses. It seems that some students do need that extra push, and that is when the teachers themselves should not be lazy to give it. My first period teacher is used to most of his students showing up at the end of the class. Other than that he never checks the homework, and many of the students have never done a single one. Somebody in my class considers himself extraordinarily lucky by receiving a sixty-five or above on their tests; not to mention how a passing grade on the report card gives them a "genius" title among their classmates. Even when the teacher was absent the students proceeded with their daily ritual.
