Mountains of the Moon is the adventurous story of the explorers Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke and the search for the source of the Nile River during the 1850's. Burton appears as the main character of the film, with Speke as a very strong second character. The dangerous expedition through the region is focused on one goal, to find the source of the great Nile, what is known by the natives as the Mountains of the Moon. Speke and Burton make contact with extreme African cultures. The film also shows another very important point of this expidition, the views of how important imperialism is to Britain. The personal lives of Burton and Speke has a great impact on the story. The feelings that are spread throughout the film show how emotional Burton and Speak are.
             This story shows how dominating a nation can be. Britain showed their obsurdity by being focused on imperialism. Burton and Speke were used to bring glory to the country by "discovering" new lands. "Discovering" can probably be replaced by "stealing" in most cases. The natives have known the land for thousands of years, and here come the British to discover it for the first time. Burton does not think they way his authority did. Rather than to conquer the region, he wanted to understand it. Burton wanted to get to know the people, the culture, and the land. He wasnt focused on pleasing Britain by domination. Speke is more neutral about the idea, but he does want peace.
             The nature of the land had a great impact on the explorers. This includes the culture, the land, and the beasts of Africa. This land was very different from the land in Britain. The climate was totally different than the climate they were used to, even though they had been there a few times. It was extremely hot and dry. Rivers were very important to the region, one of the reasons they were seeking the source of the Nile, the greatest river in Africa.
