Response to Shooting an Elephant
George Orwell, the writer of the article "Shooting an Elephant", started the article with the opinion of Burmese upon the British that he was hated by a large number of Burmese, especially by the young monks. According to this introducing part of the article, we can see how Burma and Burmese politic have had a strong relation with religion. It showed us that Burmese monks were never afraid of danger to protect against unfairness, depression and exploitation on the nation. According to the Brief biography of the writer, he lived in Burma for 5 years and the article was written after he left Burma. He said in the second paragraph of the article
Although the whole event was happening in Mon state, he had never mentioned about Mon people in the article but he did mention Burman, a dominating and majority group in Burma. Therefore, the internal migration rate in Burma would be too low, and the majority of the population of Moulmein, the city of Mon state, would be Mon people. However, he killed him just to save the dignity of White Men, instead of explaining to the public about why he should not killed him and how to manage the problem as a leader. In 1920s, when the writer was serving for Britain as an imperial police, transportation was not well developed in Burma. So that although he said he was all for Burmese, the article showed that he did not really care about Burmese, especially to the minorities. He had mentioned in the end of paragraph seven that if he left the crowd without killing the elephant, he would be laughed by the crowd, and his whole life, every white man's life in the East would be defined as coward if he did not kill the elephant. He saw that the elephant was in the field out of the city, which was saved for the people form the danger, and he had tested the elephant's reaction but the elephant did not harm him. According to the article, George Orwell had done a big mistake of killing the elephant. " These sentences showed that he had killed the elephant although he did not want to do and realized that killing the elephant would be murder. In the paragraph eight, he said, "I did not want to shoot the elephant", "I had never shot an elephant and never wanted to. Therefore, the article showed that he was very weak to be a good leader and the way he had managed the problem was wrong. that he was all for the Burmese because he hated British.
