William Carlos Williams

William Carlos Williams was born on September 17, 1883, in Rutherford, New Jersey. He lived in this town for almost his entire life, except for school and visits to Europe with his family. William got his first and last name from his father and his middle name from his uncle on his mother's side (Williams 402). William's father, William George Williams, was an English Episcopalian (Longman 1). William's father never became an American because using his British papers made trips he frequently made to South America easier. He did not go to church much but instead went to seances with his wife (Williams 15). When he was near death, he appeared in a dream of William's. In this dream William saw who he thought was his father dying. When he realized that his father was not dead, his father spoke to him and said, " You know all that poetry you're writing? Well, it's no good" (Williams 15). William's mother, Raquel Helene Rose Hoheb, was mentally unstable and had psychotic episodes during times of emotional stress. Most of these episodes happened at home, but she had an episode at Sunday school while she was playing the piano. William was extremely embarrassed by it. During these episodes she would point to someone to hol

" Other people have a negative opinion of Williams' work. He wrote prosaically which was the reason that his poetry did not rhyme (Litlangs 1). Williams wrote a book length poem called Paterson in installments. Children's influence on him made him able to describe ordinary things as a child would describe them. He uses these themes when he talks about entering the new world and the profound change that comes upon the creature. The complete opposite is true because it made him more attached to his home (Holland 85). Williams wrote many poems about his wife Florence ( ). Woman's sexual role is a very important topic (Wagner 107). The man made hospital with its unfavorable images ties in well with the description of the barren natural landscape. He made the journey from Rutherford to New York everyday (Williams 43). Even though his words were simple they have more meaning and emotion when read in more depth (Marthaler 87) Williams started out as a traditional poet. These include The Dance based on the painting Kernesse and Children's Games based on Children's Games. (Amy 1) Pragmatism is a concept that Williams agreed with and made him believe that what the poem is based on is not of importance compared to the end result (Holland 87). After being accepted to medical school, he decided that he wanted to quit to pursue writing. The first was known for its presentation of a baby, which was based on his wife Florence.
