1950's

The 1950's had some of the most influential events in it that shaped the movie industry. As the country was moving from a war worried place to the new utopia of the "Golden Age" there were many aspects of society that played a part in movie making. America was an untouchable nation with a very free attitude, but when women wanted to take part in movies we, as a nation, rejected the idea of women in leading roles. When the Second World War came to an end, there were many soldiers that came home to the US and found that the American dream was more obtainable then ever before. The dream of owning a home and having a wife and kids was much more real. The movie industry saw a great opportunity to capitalize on this. They made movies such as Sunset Boulevard, which was a great "date" movie that couples could go to. The movie theaters practically doubled ticket sales. As baby boomers hit the film industry the whole focus changed from making a movie to making a dollar in the movie industr

Although women had played a big part in the industry, there were not many good leading roles for women. When women got the opportunity to star as the lead in a movie, it opened many doors for them, including not having to rely on their husbands, developing a strong sense of self-worth, and finally showing the world that they are every bit as good as the men. These women were not the accepted role models of the 50's. An organization for the protection of women's rights called NOW (National Organization for Women) was one of the organizations fighting to get equal rights for women. Another strong opponent to the movie industry was the newly invented television. They also got front row seats to the espionage and mystery of the dreaded Soviet Union. TV brought a new kind of movie into people's homes. Disney had come out with movies such as Lady and the Tramp, Robin Hood and Treasure Island. An emerging issue that plagued the film industry was equal rights.
