A Bird’s Eye View
The expression “a bird’s eye view” is used by people quite frequently to describe the view of something on the ground from the sky. Yet, how many of us have actually stopped to imagine how a bird might actually interpret the human species that inhabits the ground below him? I believe that birds rather than seeing humans as creatures to be feared and respected, interpret the human race as pathetic beings whose sole purposes in life are merely to provide birds with hours of entertainment and material for their own philosophical inquires. As a youngster, I used to enjoy leaning out of my apartment window and dropping water balloons on people as they . . .
In conclusion, a bird’s eye view of the human race, if we are to take the metaphor literally and if we are to use our imaginations, may be less than flattering than we humans would appreciate. Is it any wonder why the bird sings? . Perhaps, the bird, which has no physical limitations placed upon him and is free to fly wherever he pleases, has a degree of pity for the creatures below him who are forever trapped in a concrete maze. To the bird, looking down on our city streets and our homes, our daily lives must seem trivial and redundant as we engage in the same activities daily. Perhaps metaphors, such as a “rat race” or an “ant farm” may describe well the view of human that birds have from their lofty heights. While we humans believe in the individuality and unique character of each person, I suspect that a bird might interpret the human race a s being nothing more that a mass of insects who scurry about aimlessly. Indeed, if birds were philosophers, perhaps they would muse how humanity in their daily toil, merely substantiates the glory of the bird’s way of life. For those birds that are lazy in their search for entertainment, heavyset individuals may best fit the bill as the chances of a direct hit with “bird turd” is almost guaranteed. I feel that birds experience a similar feeling of enjoyment when they launch aerial attacks with their bird droppings on unsuspecting humans below. Rather than seeing humanity as the master of all creatures, I suspect that the bird sees himself as the lord of the earth and humankind as his inferior. For instance, bald gentlemen must five a special delight to a bird in search of “entertainment” as the released ”turd” hitting the pate of the victim’s head would cause such a splat as to cause multiple casualties. Undoubtedly, birds probably see people as moving targets that each has unique characteristics.
