GLADIATOR AND CROUCHING TIGER , HIDDEN DRAGON: A COMPARATIVE FILM REVIEW
The two films I am going to review are Gladiator and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Both of these films were heavily favored Oscar candidates this year. Not only were they candidates they were the years blockbusters and juggernaut award winners. Together they combined for 9 awards. Both of these films were critically acclaimed, highly anticipated films. Also both films went back in time to borrow from past movie genres. These are two excellent films, personally I feel Gladiator is the better movie and deserved the best picture award. Gladiator is directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise. Gladiator revisits the epic sword and sandal genre last seen in the late 50's, and early 60's in William Wyler's Ben Hur (with Charlton Heston) and in Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus (with Kirk Douglas). Scott's Gladiator successfully explores the savagery of the Roman gladiator games and the ageless and universal appeal for violence by film viewers. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee (Eat Drink Man Woman, Sense and Sensibility) tells a story about love and honor, power and betrayal, as experienced by its set of mythical characters. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Drago
Realism was more evident in Gladiator and as I wrote on my midterm, I feel that Realism and believability are crucial criteria in evaluating films. This achievement is best exemplified in the film's most captivating scene, where Jen and Li confront each other atop the thin branches of a bamboo forest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. " By providing violent images of the gladiator games, the film portrays the Roman crowd's thirst for violence while simultaneously confronting the film's viewers (spectators) with their appeal for screen violence. The strength and appeal of Maximus derives from a well-developed role and from Crowe's skillful Oscar winning performance . Crouching Tiger offers imaginative plots and subplots that enhance the film's main storyline and that enrich its characters. Driven by the mission to avenge Commodus' cruelty and corruption, and guided by his principles and sense of justice, and love for! his family, Maximus is transformed from a slave to a hero. This development intensifies the significance of the characters' relationship and allows the viewer to appreciate it more thoroughly. I thought it was more accurate and believable, because although Tiger was excellent, it does rely heavily on a mystical sword and physically impossible combat scenes. The theft prompts Shu Lien to track down the thief and recover the sword, while widespread rumors pointing to the cruel-hearted and old rival Jade Fox (Cheng Pei Pei) pull Li back into the life he is trying to leave. This strategy is materialized in the film's fight scenes, where special effects and choreography combine to produce marvelous displays of rotatory, flowing, soaring, plunging movements to accompany the combatants' swordplay. " Consequently, Gladiator manages to lure the viewer into reacting as the Roman crowd does, ultimately hating the villains and rooting for the inspiring hero, as the Roman crowd does and as spectators do in sports today. Deciding to retire after years of fighting, the great martial artist Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) asks his friend Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) to deliver the Green Destiny to Sir Te (Lung Sihung) as a gift. Set amidst the landscapes of Ancient China, the story of Crouching Tiger begins by establishing the "Green Destiny" --a legendary sword-- as a central figure and object of great respect and desire. Gladiator cleverly uses its spectacular images and its powerful characters to create a dramatic story that speaks of the corruptibility of the human mind and the redeeming powers of love and justice.
