Family Values in Frankenstein
             Mary Shelly's Frankenstein portrays what can happen when a human being tries to play God. Victor Frankenstein is a very smart scientist that succeeds in finding the origin of life and creates a human-like creature out of old body parts. Seeing the monstrous thing that he created, Victor leaves his lab hoping that the creature will run off and never be heard of again. The monster runs off and learns how to speak and read by observing a poor family. The monster wants badly to confront the family but is afraid that his hideousness will scare them. The bond that the monster has towards this family and the bond he has towards his creator are what make the family values of this book intriguing.
             The monster wants to make a bond with a poor family that he is observing through a crack in one of the walls of the house. The monster is alone in the world without knowledge of anything. The monster tells Victor his story on the top of the summit of Montanvert. The monster starts off being scared and confused. He runs away from Victor's lab not knowing a thing in the world. He discovers the sensations of light, darkness, hunger, thirst, and cold. The monster discovers fire and is pleased with the warmth it creates. The monster takes refuge in a small hovel adjacent to a small cottage. The monster starts to grow fond of the family and unhappy with his loneliness. The monster plans to reveal himself to the cottagers, hoping they will befriend him in spite of the way he looks. He decides to confront De Lacey first, the blind old man. He wants to win over the old man before the other occupants of the house come back. They come back sooner than expected...
