Toy Guns and your Children
Allowing children to play with toy guns can have both negative and positive effects. Toy guns have the biggest effect on children between the ages of one and six because the children are in their earliest days of their development. The toy guns have an impact on not only children's development, but also their psyche . Young children in today's society and all societies to come, need parents that will be a filter and help their children know what is acceptable and unacceptable. Parents should show their children not only what toys are acceptable to play with, but also what are acceptable behaviors. Young children learn by observing and mimicking not only their parents, also what they see around them. There are many reasons presented for why young children should not be allowed to play with toy guns. Ones culture and family are a big determinant on how one will respond in society, respond to other children, respond to violence, and respond to a toy gun. If young children are encouraged in their play time to solve problems with violence or to be overly violent, they will not learn the necessary skills of anger management. Young children do not need to be pre-exposed to these issues by having toys that encourage violence. There are more important issues people need to be confronting in this culture. Parents must look at what is causing their young children to use the guns in a harmful way. Toy guns themselves are definitely not solely to blame for children's violence. Young children need parents that will spend time with them, play with them, encourage them and go to their sports events with them. Even though little boys and some little girls will be compelled to use tree branches, brooms, bread and whatever else they can lay their little hands on to create guns, this does not mean that parents should give children toy guns to play with. Young children model what they see others do. Toy guns have become a scapegoat for bigger issues. Many young children that play with toy guns will never go and shoot anyone. e not a healthy way to vent frustration and solve their problems. Young children need to understand the importance of sharing, loving and co-operating. It is partly learned behavior, whether parents realize it or not. It is extremely important to understand that violent behavior stems from many sources such as a child's family relationships, a child's education, poverty in the home and a child's exposure to violence. Sadly many children are allowed to sit in front of the television unsupervised.
