Cat in the rain

"The Cat in the Rain" witten by Ernest Hemingway is a short story that takes place in an hotel in Italy where an American couple is spending its vacation. Hemingway in this story tries to show the readers the kind of relationship that the two partners have; it does that in a direct way, through the language of the husband, and in a symbolic way, through the story of the cat. The cat, which is trying to protect himself from the rain hiding under a table, becomes the American woman's dream for protection and affection. When she sees the cat, she wants to go rescue him because she thinks that in that moment he needs someone to take care of him. She wants to take care of the cat just as much as she wants someone to take care of her; that is because her husband is not doing so. He does not care about her, he is reading on the bed an

For instance, he takes care of her providing her with an umbrella when she is going out to get the cat, after warning her about the bad weather. The figure of the cat is very important for the development and the understanding of the real meaning of the story because it rapresents all the woman's dreams. I think that Hemingway chose the cat as the instrument to focus on because a cat is typically an animal that is free to do and go anywhere he wants, he has no restriction and he has the chance to choose what he wants. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. The American woman wants to be free to choose, she says she wants a cat, she wants her hair to grow long, she wants to eat with her own silver, she wants candels and first of all she wants to have fun, just as a cat probably does. When at the end of the story she starts to saying that she desperately wants that cat, she is actually saying that she wants somethin new and different, something that her husband is not able to give her; in fact we can see at the very end of the story how she finally gets what she wants but she does not get it from her husband, she gets it from the owner of !the hotel. d even when his wife tells him that she wants to go out in the rain to get the cat, he does not look very interested in what she is saying or what she is about to do. This can be noticed when he does not say anything about her going out in the rain, but it can be better understood later in the story when she tells him that she want to grow her hair long and he does not want her to, that he likes her the way she is. The woman's dreams and desires at the end are realized by the old owner of the hotel and let her have it. The owner of the hotel is an old man with very kind manners, according to the American woman; she likes him and it looks like he knows what she needs, what can make her happy and how she wants to be treated better then her husband. She dreams about a change that her husband is not able and not even willing to give her.
