Since then, 10 states have begun operating juvenile boot camps, which vary in size, requirements, and program structure.(31) Since the boot camp era did not take off until the 1990s, research regarding the effectiveness has been limited. The focus of the juvenile boot camp is on offender rehabilitation.(32) It is hard to make good conclusions about various boot camp programs effects on individuals because there are different things that play an important role in this process. These things may include drug use, substance abuse, physical abuse, or sexual abuse by a juvenile, or the aftercare of a boot camp graduate.
             The field of juvenile corrections has added a new twist to rehabilitating America's youth. In 1983, the first adult correctional boot camps were set up in Georgia and Oklahoma.Juvenile boot camps are now on the rise in the United States to help first-time offenders reintegrate back into society without living the life of crime. As juvenile crime rates continue to rise, creative ways to deter some youth from a life as adult criminals must be devised. At the department's adult boot camps, intense programs aimed at changing attitudes through physical training, education, and counseling have proven successful.
             Due to the increases in juvenile crime and the high cost of residential placements, the number of boot camps for juvenile offenders has grown in the last couple of years. However, the public is not too happy about the cost and effectiveness of these boot camps.
