Personal Experience

Every student attending the University of Maryland, College Park has access to opportunities and benefits that will last them a lifetime. One of these opportunities available to each and every student is participation in the internship program. I believe that working as an intern is a valuable part of an undergraduate education because it can give a student a head start in their career. Entering any profession can be a challenging experience. For many individuals, entering a profession and learning about that field prior to entering it can make the process of entering their field a more positive and fulfilling experience. Participation in the internship program has been one of the most fulfilling and exciting experiences of my life. As a senior fulfilling my last few credits for graduation, I chose to work as an intern for the American Bar Association with the Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law. The Commission is an organization that was created by the American Bar Association as part of a sub-committee to address issues for an underrepresented group, the disabled community. This sub-committee is made up of lawyers who want to get information out and make it available for people who want to know about disa

If the case has priors, the location of that case is cited so it can be entered in the brief and the individual reading the brief will be able to refer to the prior cases for information. I strongly recommend that each and every student attending the University of Maryland, College Park, make time for independent study. I often assisted Phil by getting copies of cases to be entered in the Reporter and checking the computer database for priors. Participating in the internship program has impacted me by giving me the opportunity to work in a professional atmosphere, gain first hand experience working in the field of my interest, and working on a project that has helped the organization I worked for. In which case, legal remedies have been provided as a means of redressing the disabled communities' grievances. To aid me in making the discussion as productive as possible, I kept a record of the many solutions that were provided. The individuals who participate in the on-line discussion find the Commission's services helpful. It is an experience they will treasure for a lifetime. Upon receiving a research request, as an intern I have been asked to research all cases that deal with a particular disability, in a particular state, and sometimes with a particular organization. Disabled people are often classified as minorities because of their limitations and uniqueness, not because of race. This type of research has been very interesting. Considering I was the only undergraduate intern at the Commission, I chose to take on this task because I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to read some interesting cases, learn how to brief a case, learn more about !disability law, and learn case procedures. Working as an intern has taught me many things. Disabled individuals tend to be constant targets of discrimination in employment or public programs, prevalent prejudices, stereotypes and misconceptions. This has been extremely helpful to me also because it has given me the opportunity to decide if being an attorney is what I really want to do.
