Organizational Culture Essay

An organization's culture varies as widely as the nature of work itself. Oftentimes a unique different mix of values and norms govern the cultural environment of an organization. In today's fast changing business environment, the cultural make-up of an organizations plays a critical role in the success of the firm to achieve it's strategic objectives. In this paper I will explore the idea of organizational culture and discuss factors associated with understanding the reality of an organization's culture, with examples presented to illustrate my discussion points. *************************************************Culture is not an easily defined concept, but generally it is the values, beliefs, and norms expressed in work practices and behavior. An organization's culture is not necessarily an articulated list of values found in a carefully worded statement or available as an appendix in an annual report. Rather, culture is created by the organization itself. How employees treat and interact with one another and the values of the employees and the organization,

*************************************************Some of the most visible expressions of the culture are called artifacts. Cultural effectiveness is often tangentially measured in relation to organization profitability, output metrics and employee turnover. *************************************************Author: Matthew S. *************************************************Assessing the cultural environment in which one works can provide measurable data about the real organizational values and norms that can be used to advance personal and organizational objectives. While one type of culture may be effective at a given time under one given set of circumstances, at another time it could be completely ineffectual. These include the architecture and decor, the clothing people wear, the organizational processes and structures, and the rituals, symbols and celebrations. Mavericks are welcomed in certain occupations, but not especially in the military culture, for example. It is critical that these new hires are a good fit with the current culture. These are all factors creating to the development of a cultural environment at the o!ffice. However, often the culture varies due to the presence of subcultures that coexist. ****YOUR COMPANY GOES HERE**** is an example where there are subcultures created as a result of the myriad of constituencies (students, faculty, staff and administrators. An outsider can often spot these artifacts easily upon entering an organization. Since the culture of an organization operates at both a conscious and unconscious level, often the people who see your culture more clearly are those external to the organization.
