The Art of Stained Glass
Many artists place the art of stained glass into the category of "minor art". To some artists, the action of making stained glass is a craft, but the final product is viewed, not only as a work of art but also an expression of the artist, the subject they were presenting, and the architecture that held the stained glass. Labeling art as a craft is an insult to the artist; it is a nice way of saying the art is mediocre. The art of stained glass takes an acquired vision. The manufacturing of stained glass windows is extremely labor intensive and costly. It combines skills used in painting and architecture to create a new, eye pleasing art form. In this paper I am going to prove that stained glass is truly art by describing and comparing the works of art in the Cathedral of St. Julien du Mans with other stained glass windows. "The art of stained glass came from the Norman and Early English styles. Accidental varieties of color arose from the crudeness of methods of glass manufacturing which originated the idea of applying color to glass." The Cathedral of St. Julien du Mans was built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Stained glass belonged wholly to the Christian era. During this time there were no stained glass desig
The 13th century was the age of colored wall of glass. The third characteristic of the first period was the influence of iron work. "Glassworkers cut the windowpanes to the desired shape of the designer with iron shears. The light seems to dissolve the material substance and transform it into an abstract spiritual vision giving greater meaning to the religious importance held by the people of the Byzantine Empire. Although the Ascension, like many early stained glass windows, had to change because it suffered from restoration, at no time did artists understand better the possibilities and limitations of the art and adopt a better technique in regards to the Cathedral of St. They are not in their original positions, the original construction and design of the Cathedral of Le Mans was later hypothesized. The 15th century was a time of transparent walls with fancy interruptions of color. "Because Le Mans has more flying buttresses and the glass is appropriately colored in its clear mixture of reds, blues and yellows. The final work of art is only completed with the help of many artists. The fourth and final characteristic of first period glass is the method of painting. One stained glass window is made in steps with many different artists in order for completion. The Ascension, of the 13th century, has hundreds of purple, blue, red, yellow, green and white pieces compeered with the 15th century who would give detail with enamel painting and silver stain. The more common belief is that the upper part of the window was lost during an attack, fire or simply because of wearing away after many years. The effect of light strikes the human spirit giving a new dimension to the art work.
