"Slated" is a seating design project that not only encompasses anew idea of what seating is, but also uses a material in a new way. Thismaterial would be slate. Slate is a extremely strong and durable rock thathas been commonly used for roofing and pavers. Slate is commonlyavailable in standard sizes ranging from a 4x6 roofing tile, up to a 50x60paver. For the Slated project two 18x30 sheets were used. This size is acommon paver size. The slate used was approximately a half of an inchthick, however do to the natural imperfections thickness varies. Thickness isusually standard due to the processing method. At an average quarry alarge block is chiseled and the slate fractures along its natural cleavagelines. A cleavage line is a line of weakness that runs throughout the pieceproduced from the layers of silt that have been compressed to form theslate rock. These lines of cleavage a fairly uniform providing for this Slated's design was inspired from the natural beauty and simplicity

Drill all holes in slate and metal usuing a 3/8 inch carbide tippedbit. The casters are a three inch phenolic rubberwheel with a steel body and 2 1/2 inch long threaded stem. These rods are 3/8 inch and approximetly 17 incheslong. With the casters threaded in place all the pieces are heldin tension against the pipes. After final assembly all metal was sprayed with clear lacquer againto assure no oxidation would accure. Prepare all other surfaces and hardware for installation.
