Here the narrator is a mother giving the reader a glimpse into her life, choices she made as a mother, and being a single parent. Through her defense of her situation, she exposes to the reader the underlying insecurities that riddle her mind about her mothering. The tale opens with the narrator explaining the pain she feels when she is reminded of her past and the choices she made. "Tillie Olsen wonderfully writes about the narrator's insecurities. Tillie Olsen writes about how the character, through physical sacrifice, nursed her child. Is she back with her husband? Has she meet someone new, a new husband? You are forced, as a reader to accept her marriage is not part of her mother role but of her own survival. " As the writer leads the reader into the middle and end of the story, we are in the dark about a few things. She admits that she was a first time mother " . It is unfortunate that her husband failed his family, expecting that 'she could endure' where he could not. Tillie Olsen points this out by writing ". It does not state to whom she married. Lastly, she collapses under all of it. " Tillie Olsen leaves us, the reader with the sense that the character in the story now feels more of a failure. When the narrator sent her child off and set out to financially secure herself, the mother's determination was to get her child back and be the traditional mother.
