Moral Values swings the election
On November 2, 2004, the American people were faced with one of the most important elections of our time. Previous days before Election Day, it seemed as if John Kerry had the popular vote. In the aftermath of the elections, President Bush won the Electoral College vote as well as the popular vote. Before and after the elections, many polls where conducted on which was the major factor for choosing a candidate. It turns out that "moral values" was a hidden but a major factor. To understand "moral values", one must analyze what issues fall under this category and why it cost John Kerry the title of becoming President.
Kerry would have the disadvantage on this issue. Kerry is a devoted Catholic but failed to show his faith as one. If "moral values" were the major factor among Bush voters, this would imply that about half of the people in this country are against gay marriages. Another issue that is brought up when talking about "moral values" is abortion. Kerry's position of being personally opposed to abortion but supports abortion rights is the very thing that contradicts his personal view. Kerry, however, was against banning the partial birth abortion. George Bush, on the other hand, calls himself a "Born-again" Christian. In fact, President Bush proclaimed September 14 as a National Day of Prayer & Remembrance for the Victims of September 11. It was banned in this country by President Bush. Despite all the issues affecting the country, "moral values" took a major toll on the decision of the presidency. President Bush is even trying to ban same-sex marriages nationwide. Many people thought that Kerry was going to win at least the popular vote since it seemed that President Bush was going to only serve one term. This is one of the main reasons why many Americans believe he is a "wishy-washy". Although they have always stirred up controversy, it can not be compared to the Partial Birth Abortion. In exit polls conducted by The Associated Press, 79% of Bush voters choose "moral values".
