Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway

In the short story "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway, I read about the character of Jig. I began to focus on her as a character for my analysis because I was impressed by how she expressed all her feelings without directly telling you what was happening. Jig revealed that her life had come to a fork in the road, she is confused and eager to make the right decision. She is torn between her lover and the possibility of having to end the life of the child being created inside her. Yet, through all this frustration in her life only her gestures and creative ways of describing colorful situations informs the reader of what is actually going on.
Jig is a young American woman traveling in Spain with her lover. Even though it is not said directly, the reader is given the impression that she is traveling into Madrid to have an abortion. Her state of mind while waiting for the arrival of her train at the station, is that of a child in a candy store. In other words, she has more than one option to choose from, but is having a difficult time making up her mind.
One important thing know about the character of Jig is that her lover has manipulated her. She has been told by her lover several times throughout the story that "it's the best thing to do."(Line 57, Pg.324) Which refers to her having the abortion. However, I believe that he has not considered her feelings in this decision. He is simply trying to convince her into having the termination of her pregnancy because he does not want to be a father. The constant reminder given to her by her lover that the abortion is the right thing to do only leads her to question her decision more. Clearly, she is being reminded of the baby by just about anything. Even as she looked around the train station she noticed the mountains and how round and big they were suggesting the size a woman's pregnant body.
