             In Home Away From Home, the importance of the black family is symbolized in the hut in the back yard. In the film black families are portrayed as being close knit and respectful of their family history. The hut in the back yard provides a place for the viewer to recognize these qualities because it is used by the family as a place to come together and beat adversity.
             The Hut in the back yard is important in showing the close knit relations of the family in Home Away From Home because it is a place where the mother and the family spent time outside of the house playing and becoming closer. It also shows the strength of the mother, who is the back bone of the family, because she built it from the ground up for her family. The hut also represents the respect that the family has for their past. African civilization was very family oriented and the African women was a person who was an integral part of keeping the family going through tough times. The hut is symbolic of the past because it is similar to the dwellings of the family's ancestors and it is a place where the mother often comforts her children when they are down. The aspect of family importance is shown when the hut is vandalized. The children are very upset but the mother consoles them and they plant seeds that grow into beautiful flowers.              The hut in the back yard is a tool that the director uses to show distinct qualities that African families have.
