Defining Terminology Used with Databases

Familiarity with the terminology used with databases is good to know for any computer user who may run across a database to retrieve a request for information. Databases have a language of its own. If you are not at least familiar with the terms used when referring to databases, you may be missing out on some very valuable information. Data Resource Management, Database Management, Database Software, Types of Databases, Database Development, and Data Access flow down the ladder with terms used that are unique to the fundamental understanding of databases. The first, and one of the most important concepts in understanding Database Management, is to have a firm grasp of what data is, why it is important and how it is utilized as an organizational asset. The term 'data' refers specifically to a body of fact and/or information. (Infoplease.com). Application development [3], database development [4], database interrogation [5], database maintenance [6], graphical queries [7], natural queries [8], and SQL queries [9] are just some of the common terminology used when referring to database software. Database management thus consolidates data records and objects into databases that can be accessed by many different application programs. The database management approach allows the end-user easy access for common types of data used and needed for many different applications. The concept of data resource management has three major components; database administration, data administration and data planing. Key transformation allows a user to retrieve data based on an "arithmetic computation on a key field of records (social security number, address date-of-birth etc. Database software allows users who are not programmers the ability to pull data from a specific database, and make that data into user-friendly information [10]. And the last activity is to provide an inquiry/response and reporting capability so that the information can be accessed easily by the user [2]. Graphical queries which is the use of a mouse which translates by the software into SQL commands. A database is the interwoven series of logically related records or objects. The user can access this data in three different ways; direct access [11], sequential access [12], or the indexed sequential access method [13].
