Comparing Hemingway and Fitzgerald style of writting
Hemingway and Fitzgerald were great writers of their time. Hemingway's stories are about having a proper role model to grow up to as you are a child and become, basically giving an image of a proper man, but the same goes for the stories for Fitzgerald. Their stories would always have a strong male character in their story to set the example like all writers may have, but the way these two writers set it up was unique and that is something that will be attempted to be pointed out in the essay. The topic of this paper is indirect presentation and how the authors use it. So the thesis is to answer this topic that has been chosen which is finding the ways these two writers use indirect presentation to unfold their story, which is the message of lost time, and how it is unique to theer style. To prove this main character analysis shall be done, as well as finding some sort of symbol in the stories if possible, and the purpose and effect. In the story of "A Clean, Well - Lighted Place", the effect it has is that it makes someone who reads it realize that it makes the person feel that life is truly short and it is a precious commodity. It also shows the
The way that is it shown that he is sad for his lost time is this, " I thought we might walk up Fifth Avenue about five minutes and eat wherever we happened to be. It his attempt to reconnect to the civilization of which he lost contact with and to try to get back with it. Also to the older waiter he shows remorse of lost time, and that he wishes to accommodate others like him by keeping the cafe open late at night it is a more respectable place to go and one can keep their dignity drinking at a cafe rather then a bar. This stories effect and purpose is similar to "A Clean, Well - Lighted Place", the meaning of this story as the others is that it presents one character in each story that mourns for the time of which they have lost. The purpose of the story is the effect and the effect is given by the older waiter finding his life empty and feels he could have done more then he has done in his lie, that he could of made his life better and perhaps lived in a more happier state. The other main character of these two stories if from the "Lost Decade". So in conclusion I can say that these two authors had similar characters in each of their respective stories and that in these two stories each author used a different method of introducing the mourning of lost time. He is first shrouded in mystery, as most authors do but the way Fitzgerald does it is that one must read the story a couple of times to understand the meaning of it. This reaction alone shows the importance that eh cafe has in the story and the connection it sort of has to the older generation. The reason why the older waiter may feel that he has lost time is that he has no sense of belonging to something or someone and the cafe fills up that void inside of him. To prove this, one can read the following comment by the young waiter in the story, "I wouldn't want to be that old. The reason for this is that one must be able to gain form the story, it teaches an important lesson of time and how precious it is. This story is not so much of disrespecting the elders it is more on not understanding them, this is relevant because to not understand something or someone you tend to disrespect it and just discard it as if it has not value, so not understanding can lead to the disrespect.
